One of the biggest icons of electronic music, Tangerine Dream has painted stadium-sized soundscapes for no less than half a century.
Founded by Edgar Froese in 1967, Tangerine Dream revolutionized a new style of electronic music with long instrumental tracks based on synthesizer and sequencer sounds, also known as Berlin School and Kosmische Musik. The groundbreaking record Phaedra in 1974 reached gold status in the UK and was also the first hit album on Virgin Records. It became one of the most important and innovative works in electronic music. Over the last 50 years the band released more than 100 studio albums, created over 60 film scores, won the VGX Award for the best computer game score in 2013 (Grand Theft Auto V) and was seven times Grammy nominated. The group had many different line-ups, with Froese as the only constant member.
In January 2015 Edgar Froese, founder of Tangerine Dream, passed away and his wife and management of TD, Bianca Froese-Acquaye, continued with the legacy of her husband realizing his last musical vision of the so-called QUANTUM YEARS with the remaining band members. Edgar already started this new period by forming a new band line-up in 2014 with his longtime colleague Thorsten Quaeschning and the new member Ulrich Schnauss together with Hoshiko Yamane (member since 2011) to concentrate on pure electronic sounds. Tangerine Dream today consists of Thorsten Quaeschning (musical director), Hoshiko Yamane and Ulrich Schnauss. Their last album Quantum Gate, was released due to the 50th anniversary of Tangerine Dream and was nominated for the Progressive Music Award in 2018 in the category Best Album Of The Year. It is based on a part of Edgar’s musical ideas and compositions, which he already began before his death and which the band now successfully refined into that new creative and experimental-orientated direction of a modern electronic symphonic sound.
In honor of Edgar Froese, Tangerine Dream are looking forward to performing their musical portfolio – both old and new, well-known classics, some new tracks from their album QUANTUM GATE and an impressive real-time composition session in the style of the 1970s at the end of every concert.
