British composer and experimental artist Christopher James Chaplin studied piano with Irene Denereaz in Vevey (Switzerland) before moving to London in the early eighties. Having composed a number of pieces for theatre, in 2009 he was invited by Viennese electronic music label Fabrique Records to collaborate with Thomas Pötz aka Kava on “Seven Echoes”, a concept album released and presented live for the first time at Austria's well-known Art Brut Museum Gugging. There he met electronic music pioneer Hans-Joachim Roedelius (Cluster, Harmonia) who later invited Christopher to take part in a “Late Junction“ live session for BBC Radio 3. The result of this second partnership eventually led to another collaborative album, "King of Hearts". In the years that followed Chaplin and Roedelius performed around the world; these were largely improvised works with Roedelius on piano and electronics, and Chaplin on synthesizers and orchestral samples.
October 2016 finally saw the release of Christopher Chaplin's highly acclaimed first solo album "Je suis le Ténébreux", recorded at Air's legendary Atlas Studio in Paris and various locations in the UK. It weaves experimental musical influences around a sixteenth century text, an epitaph known as the Enigma of Bologna. After touring and returning to his own studio for several months he put out his second solo album “Paradise Lost“ in June 2018, featuring the American vocalist and poet Leslie Winer and British tenor Nathan Vale. In this powerful soundtrack of winding paths through the (un)conscious, Chaplin again combined experimental electronic with chamber and contemporary music approaches.
Alongside his studio recordings and solo live concerts (supported by visual artists Luma.Launisch) Christopher continues to play numerous collaborative and improvised shows with Hans-Joachim Roedelius and other artists such Icelandic electronic music trio Stereo Hypnosis. Based on these live improvisations an ambient album "Bjarmi" was recorded in Hvammstangi, northern Iceland in 2018.
Christopher is currently back in the studio working on his third solo album, the final part of a trilogy and due to be released in 2020.
